Agriculture is the foundation of East Africa's economy, but the region's greatest opportunity lies in transforming its abundant agricultural resources into higher-value products. Too much produce continues to be sold in raw form, limiting economic returns and missing opportunities for processing, packaging, branding, and manufacturing. By investing in value addition, East Africa can reduce post-harvest losses, improve product quality, expand market access, strengthen food security, and create more resilient agricultural value chains.
Value addition is the catalyst that connects agriculture to industry. By transforming raw agricultural commodities into branded, processed, and market-ready products, East Africa can build globally competitive industries, diversify exports, and increase incomes for farmers and manufacturers alike. The region's growing consumer market, expanding regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and increasing investment in manufacturing present unprecedented opportunities for agro-industrial development.
FoodPro East Africa brings together industry leaders, technology providers, investors, policymakers, and producers to showcase innovations, forge strategic partnerships, and advance the industrial transformation of East Africa through value addition.
Powering East Africa's Food Processing Revolution
The economies and livelihoods of citizens in East Africa are fundamentally anchored in agriculture. This vital sector contributes an impressive 25% to 40% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for East African Community (EAC) countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Republic of South Sudan. Moreover, agriculture serves as the primary source of employment, engaging over 80% of the region’s population. With more than 70% of industries in the EAC being agro-based, the reliance on agriculture for essential raw materials underscores its critical role in driving economic growth and enhancing food security throughout the region.
